After graduating as an electronic engineer, Byland Media ’s proprietor, Mike Wells, joined the BBC as a broadcast engineer. Here he spent twenty years, working for the Corporation in London, Nottingham and York. His final post was Engineer in Charge at BBC Radio York, after which he left to set up HI-Q Broadcast Ltd. This successful small company had staff travelling the length and breadth of Britain providing engineering services for many TV and radio stations, national and local; commercial and BBC. Now Mike’s vast experience is available through Byland Media.
Mike has always enjoyed being at the "sharp end" of broadcasting, working directly for programmes on Outside Broadcasts. He has been responsible for Outside Broadcasts from the Chelsea Flower Show, Royal Albert Hall, York Minster, Harewood House and Wembley Stadium. He provided the broadcast sound for the enthronements of two Archbishops of York, and both the Catholic and Anglican Bishops of Liverpool. The latter recording won a prestigious Sony Award.
Mike is a Master Member of the Institute of Videography
Mike’s wife, Breda, works with Mike when filming weddings. They met and were married when she was attached as an Education Producer in the BBC. Since returning to teaching, she has kept in touch with the broadcast industry, working as an occasional sound operator.
Breda’s input to Byland Media is invaluable. As well as organising the logistics of filming weddings, she
operates a camera
on the day too and assists
with the editing. Her teaching experience and gentle interview technique are
appreciated when we are filming well wishes from shy wedding guests.
